The US economic recovery is at risk of being derailed this year by a “homegrown fiscal crisis”, Peter Orszag, former budget director in the Obama administration, has warned.
In an opinion piece for the Financial Times, Mr Orszag, now a senior executive at Citigroup, said international investors should “pay close attention to the fiscal trends in the US”, noting that the political system has so far failed to tackle the country’s bleak long-term budgetary outlook.
